Personality Profiling: Do Opposites Really Attract?

At Right Trax Training, we use personality profiling to support our own, often opposing styles…which can be ‘fun’!

 

Personality profiling is something that we feel passionate about. For us, we deliver much in the way of MBTI and Insights Discovery training and workshops. Tools like these can benefit the workplace and relationships immensely, if used in the ‘right‘ way.

We’ve gained great value from completing various personality profiles, which have helped us to understand that we are very different in our styles, approaches and preferences. This in turn has allowed us to develop the areas we may need to ‘turn up’ or focus on and leverage what comes really naturally to us.

 

Perhaps the biggest benefit however, is using the information to show us where each other is stronger (yes: and weaker), so that we can bounce off each other – which works great whether we’re deep in the detail of a proposal or facilitating events at fast pace!

 

All too often, we hear that opposites clash, and that we will lock horns with anyone very different to us. Of course, that may be true sometimes, but truly understanding our own preferences allows us to adapt and connect much more effectively with those around us, so that we easily complement and synergise with those who are opposite to us.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator: How Do You Use Yours?

INTJ? ESFP? Can you recall your MBTI ‘Type’ and are you really getting the most value out of your profile? We’d guess: probably not.

 

Companies spend vast amounts of money on personality profiles to invest in their employees as part of team development events, individual coaching support, training or workshops.  When we receive a personality profile such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®), so many of us are astounded at how accurate it appears to be. We are wowed by the insight it provides us with, particularly in how we relate and communicate with others personally and professionally. Yet what do we actually then do with this valuable information?

 

MBTI® is a typical example of a popular tool that is under utilised or mis-used within organisations. In our experience, we see the impact of this when many people are unable to recall their Type or what it means for them in terms of everyday life. MBTI® has several layers which, when explored, uncover a whole new depth to it’s meaning.

 

The four letters at first seem like a complex code that needs to be solved. Whilst it is important to get to grips with the preferences such as I, E, S, N, etc., the real power lies in understanding how the preferences within your Type interact with each other.  Unfortunately, too many fail to explore this part of MBTI®, missing out on this vital development be it due to lack of desire, time or opportunity.  Discovering the dynamics of MBTI® should be challenging yet fun, not to mention extremely thought provoking.

Personality Profiling: How To Use Not Abuse

At Right Trax Training, we’re into personality profiling to support personal development…but we often see them mis-used and abused!

 

We provide many people with development in the form of MBTI and Insights Discovery training and workshops. If you’ve had experience of such types of personality profiles, you may be familiar with a few (understandable) misconceptions. Such as:

 

  • Being subjected to receiving a profile from someone with limited knowledge of what they’re talking about…
  • …which can lead to being ‘told’ that they are in a certain box and forever that way it shall be… (a quick online search through the forums easily confirms this)
  • …which can lead to nervousness and suspicion about these profiles, particularly when they’re used for non-developmental purposes.

 

Let’s be clear – we regularly see that they can be abused and they can be mis-used. For example, we are always adamant with our clients that they are not used for recruitment, selection or de-selection purposes; there are plenty of great competency and capability tools out there, but personality profiles measure our preferences rather than our ability. We only wish some of our competitors were as scrupulous.

 

When used in the right way, the learning from personality profiles can open our eyes to how we are all different. We look at the world in different ways and this understanding of perception is the cornerstone to then being able to adapt our approach to connect more successfully with each other.

 

Sure, we all have our preferences – our modus operandi – yet we each have the capacity to adapt our style and approach depending on the situation…if we so choose to.

 

At Right Trax Training, we’re also careful to avoid the common mistake of assuming those with very different or opposite preferences will automatically clash. It’s something we work hard to educate on and live up to day-to-day.

The Power of Perception

We all claim to know how important it is to look at the world from another perspective, but how often do we actually do it?

 

I was talking to a friend and colleague recently who was venting about how they disagreed with one of their client’s decisions not to take the recommended advice being offered, and I asked one question: “Why didn’t they want to do it?” to which he was stumped.  “I dunno” was his response; and it got me thinking.  Either he didn’t question enough or he wasn’t putting himself in his client’s shoes (or both!).

 

How often do we actually do that though?  Stop, and think about things from someone else’s perspective.  My belief is that many of us say we do when it’s a very different story in the heat of the moment, be it at home or at work.

 

When we talk about ‘perception’, it’s nothing more than our own view of the world, which by its very nature is distinct, different and unique for each and every one of us.  It begins to form from birth and is moulded by our values, beliefs and experiences…hence why everyone’s is so very different.

 

At Right Trax, we often introduce this idea of perception during MBTI or Insights Discovery training and workshops by using a few optical illusions.  Try this one with the revolving cat, which is another take on the popular revolving ballerina…

 

1. Stare at the image above and see if it is moving to the left or to the right (if the image is not rotating on your screen, you can find it at the link below).

2. Now keep staring at it for a while longer and see if it changes direction.  For some people it will and for others it won’t, it doesn’t matter (although if you only see it moving one way or the other, trust me: it can change!).

 

Something like this helps to quickly hit home just how often we all can see something differently when looking at exactly the same thing.  It doesn’t automatically mean that one person is right and one is wrong, just that they are seeing it from two different perspectives.  But think how often that happens to us, just at work let alone outside of it.  It’s practically every day isn’t it?  And it is how we then deal with these differing perceptions that contribute to how successful or not our personal impact and interactions are themselves perceived to be by others.

 

So next time you feel yourself about to react to someone else’s perception, I urge you to stop and put yourself in their shoes; try and see the world from their point of view.  I promise, if you do this, things will look different for reasons that are just as valid as the ones that have formed your own perception.  Once you can appreciate the other perceptions you can then move towards having easier, more cohesive and just downright more enjoyable relationships, be it with colleagues, your manager or you husband / wife / boyfriend / girlfriend / best friend!
